It’s important to include all costs

Driving lessons are not the only cost you will incur to obtain your driver’s licence. Learning to drive involves other costs which are easy to forget but need to be budgeted if you want to avoid surprises.

The following shows you what to include and how to calculate your costs. The price of each item in these lists are subject to change, so you need check with your school and the SAAQ for prices in effect when you decide to enroll.

What to include:

To calculate the true cost of acquiring your driver’s licence, you must include all of the following:
  • Driving lessons
  • Participant’s Guide (sometimes free with promotions)
  • Initial knowledge test pass certificate  (SAAQ)
  • Learner’s licence (valid for 18 months)
  • Rental of a car for the road test (if you don’t have a car)
  • Road test (SAAQ)
  • Photo for your probationary licence
  • Probationary licence (valid for 24 months)
  • Photo for the regular driver’s licence
  • Regular driver’s licence (valid for 12 months from your date of birth)

Motorcycle driving lessons are mandatory since July 2000, even if you have a Class 5 (Passenger Vehicle) driver’s licence.

What to include:

To calculate the true cost of acquiring your driver’s licence, you must include all of the following:
  • Driving lessons
  • Participant’s Guide (sometimes free with promotions)
  • Initial knowledge test pass certificate  (SAAQ)
  • DOT-certified protective Helmet
  • Learner’s licence Class 6R for driving on a closed track during road tests for Classes 6A, 6B and 6C
  • Rental of a motorcycle (if you don’t have one) for the closed track test
  • The license of class learner 6A, 6B or 6C valid for 18 months
  • Road test (SAAQ)
  • Rental of a motorcycle for the road test (if you don’t have one)
  • Photo for your probationary licence
  • Probationary licence (valid for 24 months)
  • Photo for the regular driver’s licence
  • Regular licence (the cost varies according to the classes of licence included)
