Learn to drive a motorcycle

In Quebec, motorcycle driving courses have been mandatory since July 2000, even for drivers who have a class 5 driver’s license (passenger vehicle).

Why is this? Because driving a motorcycle presents very different real-world challenges than driving a car, for that matter. The goal is for you to learn to :

control your motorcycle
in all circumstances
on all kinds of roads
ride alone on the road or in traffic, day or night
ride while ensuring your own safety and that of other road users
behave safely in all circumstances (even behind someone who is riding too slowly or after being cut off by a bad driver, for example)

Our theory courses are given online and the practical courses are given on our own closed circuit in Sainte-Catherine. Our courses meet the requirements of the SAAQ and the AECQ.

Information

Types of Class 6 licenses

In addition to the learner’s permit, there are three types of permits, based on the size of the motorcycle you wish to operate.

The Class 6R Learner’s Licence, which allows you to operate any type of motorcycle on a closed circuit.
Probationary licence.
A Class 6A licence allows you to drive any motorcycle.
Class 6B licence allows you to drive a motorcycle with a displacement of 400cc or less.
Class 6C licence allows you to drive a motorcycle with an engine size of 125cc or less.

Note 1: The new class 6E (three-wheeled motorcycles) is included in the class 6A, 6B or 6C licences
Note 2: An electric motorcycle is considered part of Class 6C.

To obtain a licence in one of these classes, you must complete different steps and meet the requirements for each class. You can start your course as early as 16 years of age (before 18 years of age, you will need your parents’ consent).

Step to obtain a motorcycle license

Studying to prepare for the theory test (reading the guide to driving a motorcycle)
Pass a theory test at one of the SAAQ offices, which allows you to obtain a class 6R learner’s permit
Take a 3-hour theory course online on Zoom
Complete 16 hours (4 x 4 hours) of closed circuit practical training
Complete 1 x 3 hour theory course online on Zoom
Complete 10 hours (5 x 2 hours) of on-road training sessions
Pass the closed circuit driving test at an SAAQ branch, which allows you to obtain a class 6A, 6B or 6C learner’s permit
Complete 11 months of accompanied driving
Pass the final SAAQ road test to obtain your probationary licence (6A, 6B or 6C)

Probationary period

As of May 18, 2018, the holder of a Class 6A learner’s permit is no longer required to be accompanied by an experienced motorcyclist. However, he or she must abide by a curfew prohibiting him or her from operating a motorcycle between midnight and five o’clock. All learner riders are affected by these changes. This new restriction applies to both current and future holders of a Class 6A learner’s permit.

To change your motorcycle license class

If you have a class 6C license and want to upgrade to a class 6B or 6A, or if you have a class 6B license and want to upgrade to a class 6A, simply retake the final road test on a displacement corresponding to the license you want to obtain.
